Hey all, I was thinking about purchasing my 2nd tarantula. I have my eyes set on a the gooty ornamental...i know it comes with a high price tag but for me it's worth it. Does anyone have a gooty? Are you happy you made the purchase? Any advice? Thanks all.

ps: It will be my 1st arboreal old world tarantula. I currently have a B. Smithi....she is a real doll. (well...70% sure its a girl. I'll post a pic if someone feels somewhat confident in sexing a tarantula from a picture)

That's a pretty big jump to be making from a B. smithi; Poecilotheria are like lighting & have a temper & bite to match! You should consider getting one of the other ornamentals before making that jump in order to get a better idea as to what you're getting into; you need to keep in mind that these are medically significant tarantulas, too!

I do not own a gooty ornamental (Poecilotheria metallica) as I find their price to be grossly overinflated considering that they're not in short supply.

Always loved the ornamental T's but the venom concerns always keep ed me from them . Research like crazy.

i kept p regalis once didn't like how fast they was the symptoms from their bites is pretty bad and alot of ppl go into a relapse from the bites 2 years later. i got out of them too fast and potent for me

work your way up to them. That is a big price and big risk if you mess up. Start with an OBT or something. They are quick and nasty just like the ornamentals.

when you say fast do you mean fast to put up a threat posture or just fast to bite...maybe fast to escape when trying to clean the enclosure? i guess im just not sure how fast is bad. will a p.metallica put up a threat posture? If it does at least the behavior can be predicted...which im ok with. Im not ok with me putting my hand in the tank, the T not putting up a threat posture and all of a sudden he jumps on my hand and bites me.
I shouldn't be allergic to Ts but if p.metallica bites me is that a guaranteed trip to the hospital?

I dunno, i love p.metallic but after hearing from you guys it doesn't sound like a good idea. I just graduated from dental school....i kinda need my hands to be fully functional. :grinno:

I think they meant fast as in getting spooked , showing a beautiful threat display, attempting to bite what ever spooked it, and them running up the wall or person (whichever is closer), all in about 1 second. I have handled a few of the pokies I have owned, just never on purpose:WHOA:.Oh they are great fun. Call me a wuss, but after my first few dust ups with pokies, I always chilled them a bit before moving them or doing any major tank mant.

BTW- I believe OBT is short for orange baboon. P. murinus another fun species

they are so fast they teleport lol no joke seriously they are flighty too and if you open their enclosures they get so worked up they come rushing out sometimes. have you ever considered a venezulan suntiger they too are aggressive and arboreal but you dont have to worry about the venom like you would with a pokie.

forgot to ask. what is an OBT?

OBT = Orange Bitey Thing. I'm getting one next week as my first T. A little nervous about it, but I should be fine. Yes, I'm insane and apparently hate myself.

Pokies are unbelievably fast! One second they're in the terrarium, and by the time you blink they could be attached to your face. Luckily, P. metallica is much calmer than other Pokies (does anyone else find that nickname ironic?). I'd start off with Avicularia for an arboreal. Their venom isn't nearly as bad as old world species, and still very pretty (and fast). Just looking at Pokies you can tell that they mean business; big fangs, really long legs, and bright colors.

To give you an idea of venom potency of old worlds, an OBT's venom is said to be more painful than childbirth. 12 hours of swelling in the bitten area, followed by about 36 hours of excruciating muscle cramps. One bite will put you out of commission for a week. Pokie venom is worse.
