Hey all,

I've got the bug :headbang2 and my wife wont let my have any other tank then my 55 :( So I convinced my dad and uncle and now they are both setting up tanks. My uncle used to be into the hobby so he just decided to go straight into a 200+ custom. As for my dad, I found the tank below for $100 on craigslist! I think it was a steal. There was a sticker on the top frame between it and the glass that had the manufactured date Oct 6th 1983!

I only have 1 concern. There is no center brace on the tank. It doenst look like there ever was. I think its because the glass is so thick (check out 2nd pic) but I just want to get a second opinion. For filtration, I want to use a FX5 and 1 or 2 ac110s and eventually build a sump (dad is a plumber so will have excellent help)

Just wanted to know what you guys thought. Thanks.

Thanks for the tip bitter. Will def try to cook something up. Now what do you guys suggest in terms of hood/canopy/lights (I guess a 4' shop light will do for the lights). If all else fails I'll make my own. Will be building a stand for this as soon as I leak test it anyway.

Dad wants to do native. He's upstate NY so a million lakes within 30 miles. He loves fishing.

add a 12" wide x 3/8" thick glass center support and buy a perfecto glass top for 72x18 tank.

Sweet. Thats perfect.

if you build your own canopy, your canopy could double as your support for the tank. it will take a little engineering, but it could work. thats what im thinking of doing

You're referring to the center? As in prevent bowing support? Ya I can see doing that. Another great idea. This is why I spend hours on this site. Wife is hating it :)

yeah. if you build the canopy with an overhanging lip and a brace in the middle, it should support the center of the tank. assuming its built correctly. i think its definitely possible. im going to try to draw one up for my tank.

Nice pick up... He's gonna really enjoy it... I have a 125 and had thought about natives but I couldn't seem to get beyond my cichlid habit. Maybe someday.

Jjust curious Diskord ... where is your Dad located in upstate NY....?

There aren't many of us up here, I'm near Plattsburgh.
