Got a 125g for my Dad

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
there is no reason to add a cross brace.

just reseal the silicone and away you go.

older tanks were not designed to require one (hence the thicker glass) and were actually better built than the newer tanks with the thinner glass IMO.

my 90 did not have a center brace and it lasted 17 years before I sold it...

no doubt it is still holding up just fine..

congrats and your Dad is lucky to have a child like you!

that tank is 6 days older than me

if you build your own canopy, your canopy could double as your support for the tank. it will take a little engineering, but it could work. thats what im thinking of doing
That is a really good idea :) Great tank and great deal ofcourse gotta love craig and his list huh

Nice pick up... He's gonna really enjoy it... I have a 125 and had thought about natives but I couldn't seem to get beyond my cichlid habit. Maybe someday.

Jjust curious Diskord ... where is your Dad located in upstate NY....?

There aren't many of us up here, I'm near Plattsburgh.

He's around Monticello (bout 100miles north of NYC) :) It's upstate for me cuz im in queens lol.

Thanks Volt Man. I figured the thick glass made up for the lack of cross brace. As for the good child...Nah...I'm doing it for my benefit. Wife wont let me get anything else. So I figured pops house is just as good :D

"I don't care what you say that's funny... "

One of my 55's and a 29 are two of my original tanks from the mid 1970's. Still holding water!

I agree... the older tanks have a thicker glass and do not requiring bracing.

One reason for adding center piece would be to support a glass top.... most tops available today are 2 or 3 sections depending on vendor requiring supports.

I love craigslist. A MFK member mentioned a ad notifier program and I ended up getting it. Now I run 24/7 searches for anything that has the words, fish tank, aquarium, fx5 filter, and a few others :) If you're interested the program is http://www.adnotifier.com/

Will def do. I wont be up there for about 2 weeks :( next week I need to help a buddy move his 40g tank. So 2 weeks before I can go up there clean the tank, start making plans for the stands, plan out plumbing (it will live right next to the water source and a drain)

So things to do

1. clean tank
2. make stand (possibly a canopy TBD)
3. get filters (1 fx5, 1 or 2 ac110s)
4. plan out plumbing for future w/d sump
5. plan out plumbing for future drip system.

:) I cant wait. Gonna be a fun few months.

Of course all projects will be documented in the DIY section.

your right there is no reason to add a cross brace for support, but it would make it much easier to get proper glass lids for it then. i thought that would be better than having a single 6' lid, 6' lids are damn heavy. there are other options for making a lid, but glass lids are prefered for strenght, evaporation prevention, and looks IMO.
