According to the shop the knifes had been eating flake, but I haven't seen mine eat yet (2 days)...should I worry, or do they come out and pick around when no one's looking? I also feed sinking cichlid gold, I assume my knife will eat these pellets if he's willing to take flakes? Is 8" really the max size, or can I expect it to get a little bigger?

I see that they can grow to about 12"

and they eat frozen food and pellets and are shy fish, they normally eat at night when the lights go out. That might be why you don't see him eat

I have never seen one approaching 12 inches... and I even made a thread asking that question and no one could find one either.

Seems more common to max out around 9 inches.

I have had 2 completely opposite experiences with X. nigri and food. The first one I had a long time ago ate whatever I put in the tank and would actually eat from the surface. The one I have now will come out to investigate pellets, turn around and go back to his spot. If I don't feed nothing but pellets for weeks he will eventually eat some, but he has to really be hungry to do it. I don't mind because I rarely feed pellets anymore but yeah... the petstore told me he had been eating flakes too...

9" would be fine, any smaller and my growout would have to be his permanent home.

He was out and about at feeding time today, I thought I saw him snag a couple of pellets but hard to tell, he's pretty quick. He generally hangs out in one of the fake plants but he cruised around this morning, I'm thinking he recognized it was chow time (not hard to do the way the rest of the fish go for food).

The biggest I've seen was 9" but average max out is 8" Even though they are shy, they learn when feeding time is and don't seem as shy during that moment.

this is true... once they sense food they want they will come out regardless.

Mine also likes to come out when I do water changes... he likes to bite my hand when I am siphoning??? makes no sense.

LOL...come to think of it, mine used to try to bite the siphon end during water changes when I had one.

That's neat, didn't realize they were that "outgoing".

^ Well he's still behind the plants mostly but he comes out and eats pellets & flakes with the others. My polys and jurupari pick in the substrate and the knife is following right along with them.

There used to be a fish in the hobby with the trade name "chocolate ghost knife", is the african brown knife the same fish?
