got a divided tank, now what should i breed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no thanks, not really in to crayfish.

I'm thinking 5 escon juvies and 5 salvini juvies and i will keep them on each side until i get a pair then i will sell the rest. Does that sound good?

Any others?

Not sure I understand the tank setup. Is it 2 seperate 40g tanks that are plumbed together or one tank that has a divider?

It's one tank that's 80-100g but uses a sheet of glass to divid it then plumbed together with an overflow. Little hard to explain.

I think I understand. What are the lengths and widths of each section. So you pretty much have 2 seperate tanks running on one sump?

I don't think it will be big enough for Escondido's unless you can cut a hole in the glass divider and use the whole tank for the pair. 40g will not be nearly enough for a pair to coexist on one side. I have my pair divided in a 100g tank. There are wholes in the dividers that the female can pass through and the male cannot. My female spends 99% of the time on here side. She goes to visit a few times a day. The male flares, circles, twitches, and then after about 10 seconds goes crazy and tries to kill her. She quickly goes back to her side and usually takes minimum damage. You will really need at least 4ft of space with a divider to protect the female to keep a pair. They are highly aggressive.

Ok didn't know much about the species but I don't plan on keep the pair in there for life. But I don't know. Any other suggestions?

You forgot to mention that this is YOUR experience on the matter, and not actual facts determening anything about the fish in general.

I had the opposite of jgentry's experience. My pair was completely bonded, and would never leave each others side. When they laid eggs, they didn't care if others came close to them, as long as they didn't try to eat the eggs or anything.

If i were you, i would do would what i thought would be a good idea, and really go by your own experience.
Sure jgentry is right, escons can be mean SOB's!! But there are also many other cases.
Trial & error my friend, is the way forward in this business.

Ok. I might try that. So get 5 juvies of both salvini and carpin. An wait for them to pair off. If I have trouble I can just well them.

You stated that you are doing this for the money. Maybe it's a good business practice to find out the market demand first, and then figure out what you can do. What your LFSs carry....what people are trying to get but can't....whether you are trying to sell locally or online....etc. Just a general thought.

I thought JD made it rather clear that was his experience which, like your experience, is part of the fact, from which we draw conclusions. Ken had a pair in a divided 120 in his hatchery. The female knocked down the divider and killed the male. I've kept them before in a 120 and the female killed the male when they weren't even sexually mature....

Again, from a business perspective...not a safe bet IME....the OP is probably going to be in a hole before turning any profits.
