I got a 125 gallon tank and stand the other day and it came with a FX5. The guy was using it for a freshwater tank, but I'm thinking about doing fish only saltwater. That shouldn't be real expensive right? Would I need a protien skimmer too? I've been reading so much stuff online recently and I'm still confused about everything.

you got an fx5 for free?? go fresh salt is played out

Wow, I wish I was given a free 125g and a fx5 :D Where do I sign up...

Anyway it really depends on what you plan on keeping in the tank as to how much it will cost you. You will need the protein skimmer, and if your going to keep some type of coral your going to need: lighting, live rock, substrate, power-head and extra goodies that come with keeping a healthy salt water tank.

you'll love the FX5!:headbang2

saltwater is more expensive, depending on what you want to do it can be alot more expensive.

But they aren't all bad its alot easier to keep your nitrates down due to anerobic bacteria and skimmer. honestly the worst part is adding the salt.

IF you've done freshwater before and where successful, I'de go ahead and start planning out what you'll need, and buying it.. a protein skimmer is pretty much a must ime dealing w/ saltwater. If you've not done FW before, or had problems maintaining it. I wouldn't spend the money you will need to for SW. SW will cost you more money, and time. It can be worth it, but is it for you?
