Hey guys, picked up this little dude yesterday. Got him for $45 and he's a little over 3". Colors stabilized nicely soon after dropping him in the tank. Anyways, this is an Indo, right? I really like the split bar he has on one side (sorry for the crappy cell phone pics!)...

And my friend got this little guy for $25, check out the color on him!!!!! Is this a Siamese?

Ok, so what's the best way to tell? I've seen those different ID charts and would I look at the tail pattern, or the overall number of stripes?

You can also tell them apart with the price tag...

Ha that too! I just did some reading and it seems as though the best way to tell is the middle bar on the body. If it curves back and comes to a point at the bottom, its an ST. If it doesn't come to a "sharp" point, its an IT.

Is this an accurate way of telling these guys apart? BTW, did I pay too much for the 3"?? I thought it was a decent price because of his size, but what have you guys seen in other LFS?

That price is not unheard of. But they can be found cheaper. Depends on location.

The middle bar "swipe" is a good indicator. Not 100%
The tail bars are a good indicator. Not 100%
Body shape is a good indicator (wide bars usually taller then indos) not 100%

There are a few things to look at and none of them are 100%.
the best method is to keep reading thru the Dat threads and when someone posts a pic look at the responses and the reasoning people give for their ID. The more you see these fish the easier it will become to ID.:D

Thanks for the info! So it seems as though the only answer is that there is no true answer!?!?!?!?

Out of those characteristics you mentioned, are any of these more accurate than others, in your opinion? At this point it seems to me that the middle bar is probably a pretty good indicator...

Nic, I'm trying to get a handle on what the differences are between IT's and ST's. What makes you say these are IT?
