got a spare $8400.00?

If there are lakes that are "full" of them, why are they thousands of dollars? You would think if they are somewhat abundant that the price would reflect that.

There are pond/lakes full of Asian aros and bd rays yet the price of them is still high. Look at the sr aros or the 24k gold aros. There is a lot of interest in them and not as much in gars. So to get one imported raises the price.

Being that there is more interest in the Asian Aros than gars, that would help to explain the high price of the Aros, but not the gars. Gar keepers seem to be a fringe group in fish keeping, which means that there should be relatively low demand for the fish compared to others, but yet the price is insanely high for a xanthic or platinum gar. I guess what I'm getting at is that I seriously doubt that there are lakes and ponds full of golden gars in FL. If there are, then I've got a road trip to plan lol. If there are places where they could flourish in numbers, they would have to be isolated places almost predator free, as I'm sure bright colored golden fish would be snapped up fairly quickly.

It is due to the lack of interest that they are that much. Not many are imported so the ones that are cost more. There are a lot of them out there. Just like plats. Farms get them, but a lot do get eaten before they can grow up. If there was more interest like with Aidan aros they could sell larger numbers and import larger groups and the price per fish would go down. Just like if you import one fish the cost is more then if you import 100 fish. The shipping would be similar due to sizes(if you got 100 yoy or 1 2' fish.) But the import fees would be spread out among all 100 of them and you can make it back after you sell them. That is what I am saying, combined with the fact the 99.9% of the people out there can't afford to import that many. Yet other fish get imported (even rare ones) at less. Like Cuban gars, even though Cuban gars are produced by one farm in the world(maybe some Asian farms now as well), they are still more common then golden gars. Thus the price, as no farms have 100 golden gars to import to bring the price down.

Where do you gather this information from? I think you couldn't be farther away from the truth when you say there is as lake full of them.

$3000-5000 is the price range. There was a thread on the topic of the rarity of this morph last year.

There are lakes that are full of this particular morph plus they're now being selectively bred in Asia as well.

what would you call a decent number of them? 2-3 ? The stingray people all post pictures with their tens of thousands of dollars in stingrays, its not that big of a deal. The fact is there are not many around.

I highly doubt that this one is actually legal since it appears to have been caught while fishing. Most states don't take it too lightly when people sell fishes that they caught while fishing under a recreational license although some allow for sales under a certain dollar amount, and this one certainly would fall under the "commercial" category in most places due to the price.

Actually, a decent number of people on here have had Florida gars like this one, but they tend to not talk about them for security reasons. I mean, would you openly share & update information about a fish that's worth $3000-5000 on the off chance that someone decides to try to steal it?

I know that probably around half a dozen or so have been posted and/or come up for sale in the past year.

There is not a known lake full of them- I have searched many times for any information to verify this. The only thing I know is there is one aquarium that has a few. :)
