GOT ARMATUS??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They may be woooosies but they will also make you realize that all other fish are NOT worth keeping. LOL

Dats are dirty lil bastids, just like rays. They're all nice and casual, playing the part, gaining more and more of your trust everyday. Days turn into weeks, that turn into months, the time begins flying by and you don't even notice. You are on top of the world after conquoring the nasty Armatus and are in awe of the fact he is cohabing in such a peaceful way in your awe-inspiring comunity tank. Just when you think it can't get any better.........

Reality proves you right. It CAN'T get any better, it WAS the best it will ever be, as you try to pick your jaw up off the floor so you can go grab a net and a bag so your Armatus can still be with you in the freezer rather then the tank. You fish out his lifeless body and begin to try to figure out who did it and why you were willing to risk the holy grail of ALL fish, in order to mix it with a community of common easily replaceable fish.

I painted you the picture I wouldn't wish on anyone....... But it happened to me and I wouldn't want it to happen to ANYONE else.

Just ask yourself IF this was to happen would it be worth it?

That's the only point I'm trying to get across. It has NOTHING to do with woosies.

Well if that was the case, we all have 1 fish per tank, don't we ??? LOL

I do agree about fei feng...I have seen my 15" punking out my 20" CK. But again, I have prove most co-habitat "rules" wrong before.

I think one of the key point is SPACE. A lot of fish confined in a small space will create territorial aggresion. More fish will spread the aggresion, but it will increase the aggresion due to space contraint.

The goal is finding balance between spreadin aggression and space. Of course food does help quite a bit too..

HOW many people do you see with LARGE Armatus BESIDES Vamptrev?

Seriously HOW many? How many have been brought in? Make any sense to you yet?

There are a few in So. Cal. People just don't show them. However, I believe less than 50 survivals out of 400 brought in last year. Armatus is not as tough as it looks!

But again, you assume everyone in this hobby knows how to properly care for a species...

For ease of calculation, let's say out of 100 baby armatus brought in, and only less than 5% actually made it to the 10-12" size. Then out of that number maybe 1/2 of that actually made it to vamptrev's size..

How did all 97 died ? who knows ? tankmates, lack of space, aggressions, and many many more..

I really don't believe it is 100% the fault of the species. If all in all, we're to blame to the low survival rate by not providing the ideal environment in captivity

My point is that, there's a lot more to the story than we'll ever know..but it is un-fair to generalize everything based on your experience.

why didn't you separate your armatus after you lost some to your rays ?

After reading more about this thread as well as your's and john's opinion, I am contemplating on putting both of my armatus in a tank with bichirs only..

if i notice any problems with mine, it may be too late by then, but i will move mine to another tanK!

i do not want to lose it, but nothing has actually taken a punch at him yet.

Problem is not the fish! :grinno: It's the keeper. I wiped out 20+ in one w/c (this guys is very sensative to water under 7") Sometimes, my nearby LFS ran out of guppy, and these guys start killing each other, or when they were bigger and I tried to switch them off live feeder, they also went nut with each other. I also lost one to either a datnoid or aro (or both) due to believing that dat and aro were no match to Armatus :grinno:

DONT MEAN TO DERAIL---but will a 10" armatus work with dats sevs geos and bass all 7-9"
