Ive heard of baking it in the oven wrapped in foil as well if it will fit? Anyone know or heard of this method?

thought about buying some of the wood off ebay, wonder if i could boil with my turkey fryer burner
the piece i bought is awesome its the base of a tree and has the roots coming out every which way it looks great im anxious to put some java moss on it and make it look the way it should.
get a plastic tote and stick in there. Fill the tote with hot water with your python hose, let it soak over night then flip it over and soak the other side. Repeat as desired.
so using the oven method isnt to kill any unwanted bacteria? Because I can only boil the base of the piece I cannot boil the entire thing so thats why I was wondering if the baking method was to kill any harmful unwanted paracites or bacteria? You know stuff like H1N1 and all those flu viruses going around; cant be having my fish getting sick....
If you think about it when you bake a loaf of bread for a long time it doesn't get more moist, it dries out. The same would be true for your drift wood. In my opion baking would evaporate whatever water you have in it already therefore making it lighter. Even if you wrapped it in foil and were able to completely seal the foil, (which you couldn't) it wouldn't help it to sink as there would be no water for it to absorb. I always boil mine in a large aluminum pot on an outdoors propane burner and it works like a charm by not only making it sink but also by removing tannins and sterilizing it. I understand that may not be an option for all, so in your case I would reccomend soaking it in the bath tub and repeatedly changing the water as it cools down or starts to darken up with tannins.
good stuff yea i am soaking it in the tub now but it doesnt seem to be releasing any tannins even after an entire day of soaking in the hottest water the shower produces and being 98% submerged. Im going to give it another 7-8 days soaking in the tub and we'll see how things are from then. Either tomorrow or Tuesday im going to power wash it.
yea thats what i think as well 2 weeks in the bath tub soaking in the hottest water my shower goes and boiling the base of it once a day.
