you might wanna still run airstone, wat if your fx5 fails? then what?

What if the air stone fails? LOL Yeah I'm the same way, all my tanks have two filters. My larger tanks have sumps and canister filters on them just incase!

FYI to the OP: 99.9% of gas exchange happens at the waters surface. The more surface agitation you have the better. Also colder water holds more dissolved gasses than warmer water. If your fish are gasping at the surface drop the temps a couple degrees and point your returns to the surface.
 
The surface agitation created from just 1 fx5 outlet pointing towards the surface can provide enough oxygenation to keep a 600 gallon tank with normal stocking density healthy at any temp the fish can live in.
