same thing just happened to me, The guy advertised it as a 5x2.5x3H. i went round to take a look, was a very nice tank and i didn't even question the dimensions cause it looked big and the right size to me... put a deposit on it and went round a week later to pick it up, had a tape measure on me and for interests sake i measured it, it was 5x2x2.5H..... I said to the guy he advertised it wrong, He just said "you came and looked at it, you want the f*ckin thing or not?". I'm like " I assumed you knew how to use a f*ckin tape measure!"
Alarm bells should of gone off when he told me peacock bass grew to 5ft, He only had his hands about 3ft apart.... idiot
I thought it was still a good deal and bought it.... $400AU for tank,cabinet,lights,pumps,substrate.....
