Yeah UG filters are never a good long term idea. But in some situations they work well. At the time the discovery of the eel wasn't very funny, I lost a lot of nice fish to him but in hind sight it was pretty cool.....

It had been living there coming out at night to feed on my fishes and going back down the UG filter tube during the day. i had taken down the tank because so many of the fish i put in it disappeared. I thought they were dying and being hidden under the numerous rocks and plants. But no they were being eaten by the eel.
do u live n socal? i'd like 2 get 1 of thoseXiao;3315739; said:I have about 25 of them. I had more but gave them away because of a lack of space. Bought 20/28/36 inchers from a chinese supermarket, they're living with my Jardini and a wolf fish. I had 8 of them around that size, didn't work so well, they killed each other down to three. The rest are juveniles that i bought from the supermarket (all <12 inches) and they're randomly distributed throughout my tanks. I actually have a few in an aerated bucket, they're doing fine.
They're pretty cool fish (my personal favourites), very greedy and very inquisitive. Be forewarned, they like to nip at tankmates. On that note make sure the tankmates are at least 6-7x as big as the eel's head - if they actually get a hold of a fish they'll latch onto it and death roll like a crocodile.
