Got me some ammonia!

What it do fellas

Finally got me some ammonia after having tank running just water for 3 days. I had a question, cycling suggests getting ammonia up to 5ppm. I have a 120g tank, anyone know approximately how much I should drop in to get near 5? I don't wanna stand there for 3 hours doing teaspoon by teaspoon...

I will assume you know what kind of ammonia to use.
You don't tell what strength ammonia you are using, but, using 10% ammonium hydroxide it takes 1/2 teaspoon to get my 100 up to 3 ppm.
I would start with 1/2 teaspoon and test again.
BTW 5 ppm is on the high end of the recomendations I have read.
I have chosen to drop back to 3 ppm instead.
It is easier to add more than it is to remove. :)

edit: after adding ammonia allow tank to turn over it's volume a couple of times before testing again.
You do have test kits correct ?
 
Not sure exactly I doesn't say. It's the clear ammonia from supermarket. Didn't mention % but that is the ingredient, it does bubble when you shake but that's the clearestone I found, others had perfumes and dye in ingredients.
 
STOP.
If it foams when you shake it, don't use it.

Go to a hardware store like Ace Hardware and get janitorial strength , no rinse ammonia.
 
better yet, get some fish lol. cycling isnt as stressful on fish as a lot make it out. I know I will get flamed for this but oh well
 
I'd feel safer adding urine to the water than ammonia bought in a store (unless it was from a laboratory supply store).

I agree that cycling with fish can be done as long as one is very, very careful.
