Got my 1st Severum tonight

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I kept two a while back, one got separated and re homed rather quickly. Not sure if they were same sex or what but the bigger dominated it. I also found it funny that this rather passive aggressive cichlid was pretty much the boss of the tank. No one messed with it. It was in a community tank with rivuatus, carpintis, and I think I had some electric blue acara at the time too.

* I kept duckweed in the tank which it used to munch on occasionally

One of my LFS - a privately run Ma-and-Pa shop does 20% off all fish on Sundays, so I had to go buy dogfood anyway and I ended up getting a good deal - a pair of 2" Texas cichlids and a 2" Green Severum for $10. Great deal, right?

Well, i'm content and I don't expect much care or husbandry to be different from other SA/CAs I have or owned in the past but is there anything specific I need to know about Severums since this is my 1st time?

Any input at all is welcome.
Kinda hard to get good pix of a shy 1.5" - 1.75" Severum in a bare 75g tank, but here it is - tankmates = two 2" Texas, a 1" male Pink Convict, and three 2.5"-3" albino Rainbow Sharks

Keep an eye on them. Texans and Cons get rowdy. Severums usually turn into the tank punching bag.
Your texas looks a bit like a Carpintis to me btw a lot cooler than a texas in my opinion.
they are being moved in a week lol and i got the Texases from the same store i got my OG pair, which we already suspect of being CyannoguttatumXCarpintis hybrids

how big is he?

I'd say around 8 inches or so. I've never measured him, he has some battle scars from being moved so many times over the years. But he is thick and eats like a hog.

He lets my dominant Oscar have carte blanche but he challenges my "smaller" Oscar on occasion. But really the two O's mostly focus on each other. I'd say their around 12inch and 8-9 inch.

Severums are good as the tank boss. They aren't rowdy and will keep others in check so to speak. I've kept them with cons lots, usually get along really well. Size matters though. A small sev in the tank won't do so great until he manages to get some size.
