So my nicaraguensis finally came today. They had a pretty hectic journey considering my stepdad left them outside for quite a while. Becuase of this the bags lost alot of water(I have no idea why) but one fish was in like 1/2 in of cold water. i don't so much blame the company because they were actually packed very well IMO but they were outside too long. But they both managed to pull through although one is in quarentine right now while the other is in my 29 with my flier cichlids. I have found that they are very shy but I'm confident they will come around. The fliers on the other hand keep nipping them and flaring thier fins with them even though the nics are 2.5-3.5in and they are only like an inch. But there are a ton of nooks and crannies in the tank so the fish are hiding quite a bit but again hopefully they will eat soon. They are very dull with a little orange on thier belly. Hopefully they will color up soon.

Here are the best pics I could get. better pics to come. Need to change the lighting on this tank badly!

Thanks Bill I just noticed your on both forums.

The one in the main tank is definatly coming out more while the one in the quarentine is still hiding alot. I have been feeding NLS and frozen blood worms and brine shrimp. Im trying to find mysis shrimp to feed them too. Should I feed them frozen food every day? Im also feeding sprinula flakes. The nic in the main is still not showing any sort of aggression while the fliers are constantly flaring at eachother and trying to buly the much larger nic. Only then does it assert itself. The nic is still hugging the caves and the bottom half of the tank.

They finally ate today! Well... the one in the main tank did. She is still a little shy around me but she comes out a lot when im not in front of the tank. She did have her a few bites of NLS today after watching one of the flier cichlids pick some off the sand. She immediatly started gobling them up. Her belly is getting a nice orange too it now. I have noticed that these fish really hug the bottom of the tank. They also seem to sift the sand like a sand sifter mite diving head first into the sand looking for any other morsels to eat. It's amazing how much a cichlids anatomy can tell someone so much about a fish. The fliers and nics are definatly very different in anatomy and thier behavior is also very different I've noticed.

here's a couple more pics I managed to get.

Ny nics are always on the bottom. When they feed, they fly to the surface, grab a bite, and go right back down. They love to dig and are always rearangeng the gravel and gigging pits. Mine took along time to color up. My male is one of the prettiest males I have seen, and female is rather drab still. They are a bonded pair and go through every sign of spawning but she wont lay eggs.

Your female will get bolder once she pairs up and the male protects her.

Gl with them...Bill

Thanks for the comment. So does she look like a female to you? I think they might be too small to tel but IDK. The other one I thaught was a male because he had the stripe along the body but it was starting to break a little and he looks like he has some spots on his dorsal and pectoral fins.

PS: the fish in the first post is actually the suspected male while the fish in the later post is the suspected female.

That's what i thaught. I guese i will have to wait to find out thier genders.

Yeah that's what mine does. she dosen't act aggresive she just likes to assert her dominance. She does alot of flaring and chasing but it's small. She gaurds her cave very well though. Did you get yours at aht size or smaller? I ask because I have noticed there seem to be alot of variety of nics. Some have alot of blue some sport green faces like mine and some have orange all over like yours.
