Got myself a small red belly pacu.... then found out it will get massive.. :\

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm certain that our pacu came out of this small tank at WalMart.

The labeling on this tank is somewhat correct. Pacu grow to 10". But then they grow to 20", 30"+.

Who would have thought those tiny baby pacu would get so big, or would be bigger than the oscars who were so much bigger in that WalMart tank? Or that these cheap $6.50 fish would become so expensive to house. Here's what they looked like when my husband bought them in their 55 gallon tank along with their four oscar brothers and two plecos.

In defense of WalMart, I found this picture online and put a caption on it. I took it to WM and spoke with the guy in charge of their fish department. I am happy to report that my local WM has not carried pacus since I talked to them.

Not to be insensitive, but some folks here on MFK reported that they taste good....

Good for you Susan. That's awesome that you talked some sense into the people at Walmart.

I think most people in the hobby have their own Pacu story (I got two from a Woolworth store when I was 13 and tried keeping them in a 40G hex...it didn't work out so well :duh:). Lesson learned.

In regards to the Albino Pacu craze...I've also wondered why there haven't been any updates from all those people that bought them.

William, you made the right move by taking him back. You have lots of options for your 250, but a Pacu isn't one of them.

You could get one of those yellow belly pacu from rapps. He claims they only get to 18 inches. Guess we will find out. So far mine has grown an inch in only about a week or so.
