Hi guys,
We picked up a couple of retics at the weekend from richard (aquaman) and we have just a few questions as these are our first rays.
First thing,we got a male and a female and the male is about 4" disc and full tail is 10" long and the female is slightly smaller at 3.5" and 10" long.
We put them in saturday night and they were a bit shy at first but then were soon looking for food so today we thought we would try some blood worm as richard said thats what they had been feeding on and they loved it but we also put some mussel in too tonight and my god they really like that, anyway.
First question is will a feed at 530 pm then another around 10pm be enough to grow them or will they need another in the morning before i go work 730?
2nd Q.
Is mussel a good food to feed them?
3rd Q.
Should we just keep feeding them these two foods to get some growth or can we try pellets,as im pretty sure one did eat some massivore earlier as i put a few in for the other fish occasionally.
4th Q
How much growth should we be getting a month so we know that they are growing properly, obviously every fish is different but a rough guide would help.
5th Q.
Will a 40% wc once a week be ok as thats what we normally do on the tank they are in.

Thinks thats it for now, thanks in advance.

2 feedings a day should be fine, but some like to feed smaller rays 3 times a day. Not too familiar with mussels, but whatever they'll eat, stick with. That goes for the bloodworms as well. Forget the massivore for now, those things are huge and IME they just make a small ray take forever to eat one leaving all the other food to be eaten by other fish.

1. I'd feed AM and PM if possible rather than 2 evening feedings, otherwise on the second feeding they're not going to have much room/appetite.

2. Yes, if they're eating it keep at it. Try introducing other food too - shrimp, tilapia etc.

3. If you can get them eating pellet at some point, that's great, but don't sweat it as they're already eating something chunky.

4. Retics I have no idea on here :D

5. Water change schedule will be dictated by water parameters. Rays do things to water parameters that catch out the most experienced fish keepers so start monitoring the parameters much more diligently than you might expect is necessary. Watch out for ammonia/nitrite spikes, high nitrate and falling pH.

Hi Steve

If you want to get them on pellets I would start with carnivore as they are smaller and more managable for the size of ray. Start by soaking them in bloodworm if that is what they are eating and see how you go.

As already said I would go with an am and pm feed. You can usually tell when they are full as they get a hump on their back near the tail.

Water changes just keep an eye on parameters and see how you go.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the great info guys, much appreciated, guess il go and feed them now then.
