Actually, no they are not. They are in the same order. Some older classification systems have them in the same family. But they are definitely not in the same genera. So, they are indeed both Characiformes, along with several thousand other species. Since the 1970's, piranha have belonged to the family Serrasalmidae, and silver dollars are in the family Characidae, although some inter-mingling of taxons still takes place, and some consider these to be sub-families of one another. The genus of the silver dollar is Metynnis, while the genera of piranha are Catoprion (debatable), Serrasalmus, Pygopristus, Pygocentrus, and Pristobrycon, depending on what you are reading at any given time.

I don't think Flea has ever expressed any interest in silver dollars, anyway, so this is just you and I exchanging pleasantries.
