Got the Stand Framed

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's a sweet looking stand and tank. Great job! As you have already stated i would add some more bracing to the back and sides. I know you dont want to come home to a dining room swimming pool.

You can use the foam that they use as insulation from any hardware store. I got some stuff that a guy had laying around that they use to pack bombs with ( i dont want to know how he got it).
Just ask for the stuff that goes under vinyl siding. Depending on how big your gap is, you might want to go pretty thick with it.

For the love of all that is holy, that is beautiful. But please level it better. The corner is vital. There are 3 contact points in the corner. If its going to fail, that is the place that it will. My 250 g. has a little gap in the center between the tank and stand and I can already see signs of stress/warping at the right angle.

Could I get a pic of this stuff? I also have heard to use the dense foam excercise mats.
Would those be okay?

anything that will make up the difference will be ok. I'll try to get a pic.
Your best bet will be to level it out and still use some sort of foam IMO.

I just dont understand how the foam will work though. If you have high and low points to the tank/stand, you put foam between them and the lowest point or tightest point of contact will be crushing the foam. Now on the furthest part of contact ie. the gap, the tank will just be touching the foam. No support there, just hides the gap. For instance, take a small piece of foam and lay it on a table, then take a butter knife, lay it down sideways, then hold the handle part of the knife and push down on the blade part, the foam will still "give" at the end you are pushing on, so in theory, the foam wont support anything, just hides the gap. What do ya think?

I would fill that end gap or the uneven part with either wood filler, wedge and fill some shims or start over and correct the problem. Tahnks for hearing me out.

Agreed, shim the bottom of the stand to the proper degree, It really sucks having one side of the tank higher than the other...........whenever water level drops you can tell it's uneven (my 30 gal......will shim soon)......looks like crap and probably not good for the tank , structurally!!!!!!!!!
