what they tell mike and what really goes on in there ponds can be 2 different things.... please understand most places in asia just mix all rays in one pond... you cant be sure your ever getting what they say you are from most places...

good point, but a generalization, that is like saying all Americans are fat. I don't know, I have not ever ordered rays from Asia, especially not in any quantity.

 its real good popcorn again :) ill have seconds

this is interesting... im gonna put this as simple as possible... those rays are from asia god only knows who or what the original parents are... joys of SP. rays from there... the "mantilla" could have been a motoro x henlei
and a 1000 other combos... keep monthly updates on it... real curious how this ray will turn out

i agree who knows, we will never know... i think that if Mike had a picture of what was actually bred he would share it.. I think that in asia it is a secret becasue they do not know there self :)

They are supposed to be MM X Mantilla. I have an MM as well that has a lot of belly color, she is pure MM. I am not saying that these crosses don't have black ray in them somewhere, but to say they do just because of belly color is a stretch. I hope they do have other species in them, but I also think Mike knows what he is buying when he buys rays. I have 2 from the same place, and they are much different, they look like the ones that Rat has. How big is the disc on yours?

i agree they all look very different... mine is almost 7"

this ray is very active and is deffinitly getting much blacker that she was when i got her... see attached picture when i first got her in November @4.5"..

fishdog: the spots do look alot like that!

I brought up the belly spots/color when I got my "Mantilla" insinuating the same thing you are, it has to have black ray in it.....

I got nothing short of laughed at..... Belly means nothing.

When I tried to sell it I got the same result....

hmmm well until i saw fishdogs i have never seen belly markings other than on henlei
so yours has the belly spots too huh... must me a mantilla yepsi thing then :)

also to me it is hard to argue the fact is that this ray is turning blacker and blacker.............................................

Not arguing that.... I named mine "Darkness" for this very reason......

But for the most part I thought the belly spotting was a Henlei only trait as well.... At least till I got my biggest lady Marble.... Her belly looks similar to the "Mantilla's"

Don't know if yours is old enough to tell yet, but mine is about 2-3 times thicker than a Marble or plain Motoro. Seriously has to be 3 inches thick. Don't know if Henleis are like this or not. Never seen one in the flesh.

1 more thing i realized after reading your old thread about mantilla is that Brad said yours has a short tail...mine has a very long tail. longer than a motoro, which is not like a black ray that i know of.

I'm not so sure about it being short. I will check tonight. I believe it's the same as the Marbles.... Just WAYYYY fatter. The friggin thing is the size of my wrist, way fatter than the Marble of the same size.... Also lots of denticles on the sides of the tail. (IF I have my terminology right, little spikes just like on the top of the tail, but these are on both sides of the tail as well as the top)

Yours may be the same when it grows.... I know most my rays appeared to have long tails when young.

The Trust= Jed (IF I remember correctly)

I'm no expert but if I was to venture a guess I'd say that the video ray is 50/50 where as the rays we are discussing are possibly the result of breeding a ray like what's in the video witha Motoro. (75/25)

Unless you can trace history back you'll never know.....

Maybe I can shed some light on this someday IF I can ever find a male that's man enough to impregnate the "Darkness" LOL

Just some insight, my male mantilla does not have any markings on his belly. He has about a 1/4 inch of dark around the edge of his disk but has a spot free belly. The yepezi type I had is the only ray I have owned with the dark belling makings like I and keepinfish have pictured. Maybe it is a motoro/yepezi? I will have to catch pics of my male mantillas belly.
