What species are these gouramis? Do you have pics to help determine their gender? If you are referring to Trichogaster trichopterus, these are indeed aggressive especially males rivaling each other for their domain.

Gourami males hate other gourami males. That pretty much sums it up. Most of the time the gouramis you will find in your petstores are going to be male. Especially with a lot of the dwarf varieties. The females are usually just too dull, so most of what you will find are males. So, yes, you will need more to level out the single aggression, or a larger tank.

I have a 115gal with several adult Gourami and several large Barbs, catfish, loaches, etc. I have found that in the 2 years that I've had this tank operational, variety helps. Add a doscile fish bigger than your agressive Gourami. All of my Barbs, with the exception of the 2 Tiger Barbs, are at least 5" long, bigger than my Gouramis. I also have a 10" Bala Shark, the biggest guy in the tank. He is friendly, but his size keeps the other more agressive fish in check, including a 6" Oscar. If you have room in your tank my advice would be to perhaps add a large Bala Shark or Large Tinfoil Barb.

wich gourami are we talking about? My wife had 4 male dwarf gouramis alone in the same tank without any problem.

I have 3 dwarf Gouramis and they fight every so often, nothing to bad. mostly nip and run attacks.
