How many times do you need to be turning over the volume of your tank if you keep "MONSTER" (carniverous) fish? I know you can't really have too much, but how much is enough?

My 220 is turning over about 9 or 10 times per hour. Even my wife (who doesn't know the first thing about aquariums) thinks this is excessive.

I would not call that excessive. My aquaclears turn over that much on my 125 gallon tank.

You can not over filtrate a aquarium there is never to much filtration you can only have to much current in your tank, to the point it stresses out the fish and there stuck to the glass.

He wants to know how much is ENOUGH though....like as a minimum.

it depends on the filtration type.

for a power or HOB i'd say between 7-10 is sufficient for monster fish, for a w/d filter, you won't need nearly that much from what i've heard.

With a sump type W/D filter a 2.0 turn over rate is about right. They operate more slowly but do a better job biologicly so it evens out. For power filters or cannisters 7.0 or 10.0 is nice.

If your fish are swimming furiously just to stay in one spot then you MIGHT be a tad over filtered...J/k

I get 14.3 on my 29g.
I get 6.4 on my 75g.

3 or 4 times?

I turn over a 55 6 times an hour. Depends on stocking level.
