GPH? How much is "enough?"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mostly it depends on the type of filter, tank, and stock.

My heavily stocked 265 turns over right around 3x per hour with a big wet/dry.

I turn over a 55 6 times an hour. Depends on stocking level.

I have an xp3 and an ac 110 on a 55 with a single red devil. Did I go to far?

I got the same set up on my 55. am XP3 and a acquaclear 500 thats turns over 17 times is that rite?

my 100 has a FX5 and hob thats good for 2.5. so thats 11 times. I think im wrong on my turnover rate

I'm usually alone on this, but I feel that "over filtration" is simply a waste of power.

NO you are right. Unless your tank is cloudy all day from feeding it is a complete waste of power and money for filters. I don't understand why everybody is obsessed with turning their tanks over once a minute.....it would kinda be like living in a wind tunnel lol. Good for river dwelling fish who like current but a waste for filtration and electricity. as long as you have enough biomedia and your water isn't chunky you are fine. I think I turn all of mine over about 3-6 times and have never had a problem. Most people would probably say I underfilter or something but I just don;t see the point of having more filters to say I have more filters. I run a whisper 60 on a 55 and haven't ever had a problem:eek:

Everyone is different i like my fish very much and i find the more filtration i have up and running the more stable my tanks are. if one breaks down and i'm at work no problem and like i said before just don't have to much current as to stress the fish. If it were possiable i'd divert a stream into my tank and have complete filtration and water changes all the time.

No rally your not alone. I like a 7.5 to 10.0 turn over rate for messy fish but as collections grow the power consumption mounts. If you have a fixed STABLE population rather than one thats always changing then theres nothing in the world wrong with adiquate filteration. Use the power bill savings to start a new tank account...lol

i agree over filtration is a waste of power.
shoot for 5-6 times depending on stocking level.
