Hi everyone! A few days ago I bought a supposedly grade AAA flowerhorn from my lfs. Based on the picture below could anyone tell me what grade this fh is? Does it look like a kamfa or ZZ? It looks like a king kamfa to me but I'm not sure? He's about 5 in.

hard to tell from the pics. it's a srd. Also a pic of the kok and fin spread will help to identify quality. The fact that it was not properly label at the pet store automatically disqualifies from being a AAA..... The flower line isn't really drak nor runs the entire length of the body, which now a days isn't as big of a deal. It's nice looking flowerhorn for sure nice buy.

Mislabeling by anyone does not disqualify the individual from being exactly what it is. That's just simple fact ok? :)
And The flowerline can be however as long as the whole fish looks balanced to your eyes. Back in the days before king kamfas were created, the flowerline was a bigger deal. If the fish was plain with only flowerline as patterns then yeah it shall remain as something to critique.

This fish is a common grade srd, nice red and maybe future monster hump.
Not AAA and youll know it after looking at some more FHs on youtube

Lol true when it comes to individuals but when it comes down to items based on quality I disagree. It's kinda like paying 3k for a watch and being told by the seller it's a unmarked Rolex.... would you pay for a champion blood line dog with no pedigree? I'm just saying if it's something special the seller should be able to tell you the breeder if not properly identify he fish and it's heritage.

yo good morning all fellow FH keepers.
wow I got a reply ! Heyyy! :)

If a Rolex specialist got the knowledge, even if they found it in the trash they would still know it's a Rolex or not after opening it. Same with a diamond in the trash.
Dogs breeds are in a different system to compare to. FHs lineage and dog lineage are in opposite directions. Dogs want pure, FHs want super crossing.

"champion FH or AAAAA FH". Those words or letters are not legit and we can label any fish we want to sell AAA+ but that's just bla blah
Just Individual fish + the knowledgeable experienced eyes and mind.

Even if the store said they dont know what it is, that's still human ignorance and has no affect on the fish. It is still that fish right there. It will only have an affect on the person if they feel they needed a label because they don't know much.

I agree that it really comes down to the individual fish. It is always a gamble with flowerhorns even when the lineage is known for instance i myself like the check and see the parents of the future fish. As you stated super Crossing often yields variance in the fish even amongst the same batch so even having to look at the parents may not mean anything since the fish can vary. The only real information you gather from this is the least knowing that they have good genes. LOL I tend to be a little careful when I'm forking out 300-plus on a fish.

Luckily, I didn't spend 300. I knew it wasn't grade AAA because it was pretty cheap. I was just curious what grade it actually was.

I have another question. Being new to owning flowerhorns I don't understand why he is losing his color. This is his 4th day in my tank and he has almost no red on him anymore. He is eating well and swimming around. He usually stays closer to the bottom of the tank but I think that is because he is not used to the water pressure yet (he was kept in a 5g tank before I bought him). Does he sound like he is sick?
