Grammode Experience

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm learning Grammodes are pretty weird, when my Grammodes Male first hit the 3.5" mark he practically killed most of his tankmates. I've been keeping him solo for about 6-8 months.

Recently started adding some bottom dwellers, small Convicts, and a Bellycrawler Pike. So far these fish have been able to co-habitate with him; Striped Raphael Catfish, 2xClown Pleco's, and the newest additions 3xConvicts (Females) and a Belly Crawler Pike.

He's curious and makes moves on the Cons if they get too close or don't clear out of his way. The Pike's stays out of his way most of the time. The cats hide most of the time so they don't suffer his wrath.

So far so good but i know it may turn bad, got a spare 55g just in case.

Good luck with yours nuth.

Thanks Guys, I have a spare 30 just in case. It was originally going to be for my future Gy.balzanii, and will, but, I have found with this guy, if you are sub dominant to him, your ok, it's when you decide to challenge him, that everything becomes different. Does that seem to be your experience?

Nuthman~

In My Experience;

Mine was submissive when i got it into a tank with Established CA/SA's. It hid most of the time but ate. But when it started to grow it specifically went after those who were directly above it in terms of superiority. First fish it went after was a Rainbow Cichlid, which was the lowest on hierarchy. 2nd fish it went after was a Convict, which coincidently enough was just above the Rainbow Cichlid.

I moved both fish then. I tried to re-introduce both fish to the Grammodes with no luck. It then went after a fish that was quite larger and scared it to jumping out of it's enclosure, Leporinus Fasciatus.

With challengers your story sounds familiar. I added a much larger Firemouth that bossed the Grammodes for about a week. Found it dead one day, the only fish that had challenged Grammodes. Had a Gold Severum that the Grammodes never messed with in the same tank.

I am experiencing the same. My male Grammode just hit the 4in mark. I bought him from Rapps. Bought as a trio. He killed both of his females. Now I have 5 dovii in there with him. They are all bigger. The dovii will not put up with his wrath. I have a female dovii which is the dominant one and the grammode tries to challenge but no match. The grammode chases all the others around. He was shy until i added some fish. Now he is always out of his cave and swimming and trying to pick a fight.

I am wondering if he will go 2 days now. I'm at work and will not see the tank for another 6 hours!

i have a pair separated in a 100 gallon. i haven't tried introducing them with other fish. they bred for me across a divider a few weeks back. i personally like them, although i wish they were more outgoing. they tend to hide a lot if they are the only fish in the tank. they are definitely not glass bangers even when breeding.

I have a Male Grammodes about 3" a Female Grammodes about 2", in a 300 gallon with a Female Festae about 3", 2 Escondidos 1 about 3" and the other about 2", a male Green Terror about 2", a Female Green Terror about 3", a Female Salvini about 3", a Female Nicaraguense about 3", and a Red Jewel about 3".
The Grammodes is very passive and just swims peacefully in the tank, the 3" Escondido and the Festae runs the tank, although neither one uses a lot of aggression.
But the Grammodes seems to only gradually move the others out of his way. He has a huge appetite, and good color. In fact all the fish have good color. With the exception of the Salvini. His colors is ok, but I have seen better.
Anyway, I have a passive Grammodes, and wondering if I should be happy or mad, because he is not matching the stories that I am hearing...

Hey still plenty of time for him to get crazy. lol

I'd count your blessings heh He's almost to the size mine went vicious. Then again in a 300 gallon with currently same sized tankmates I think you should be ok. Good luck and throw a pic of yours up!

I think grammodes may tolerate a more high-bodied fish that looks totally different from itself. That is why it may be leaving the severum alone. My male grammodes is a glass banger at 5 inches, but of all the ones I've owned he is the only one that has been outgoing at all. He hides until I come near his tank and then he comes out to check me out. If I put my finger to the glass he attacks. Just wish I could get him to eat more.
