I just bought a 5 spot jewel cichlid today. I introduced it into my 100g growout tank and he and the grammode have been going at it when they see each other. Both are about 4 inches. Can these 2 types of fish live together? I know grammodes can be nasty, but didn't know that 5 spot jewels could be that aggressive. Anybody have both of these fish as adults in the same tank? Which one is more aggressive?

hehe... the african cichlid "5 Star General" (Hemichromis elongatus) are about as mean as they come, are way faster growing than grammodes and will whip up on just about anyone until they are dead. Ive never had one that I could keep in a CA community any longer than about 72 hrs. They are MEAN! Ive had 5 different ones (biggest was 5 inches) and they ate anything they could get a hold of and killed anything they couldnt eat. 1 whipped up on a few freddies and killed a female 6" festae when it was only 3 inches.

Ive heard some people can keep them in communities, but it never worked for me.

Good Luck!

I don't see this working out very well.

H. elongatus are probably ounce for ounce one of the toughest SOB's on the block (oh no, not another one of those threads...).

ive kept them both together in a 100 gallon tank. Since they are both around 4", they will probably rip each other up for a while until the 5 spot starts gaining size one the grammode. This was the case in my experience. The grammode was harassed until he grew to about 6 inches which is about the max my 5 star grew to. After the grammode outgrew him the 5 star just became a target fish for the grammode. Is your grammy a female or male?

as i'm typing this right now my grammode is attacking the 5 star even though the grammode is about 3.5 in and the 5 star is about 4. the 5 star does not back down either... i'll post some pics in a bit. my camera is out of batteries and i'm charging it right now. i have no idea the sex of either of these fish.

ime. the 5 stars stay closer to the top and lauch sneak attacks while the grammodes circle around flared up and attack when they want. both extremely fast fish. hope your tanks pretty big incase one becomes dominant over the other

5 star general ≠ jewel cichlid.
