grammode vs. 5 spot jewel... compatible??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
5 star general = jewel cichlid unless taxonomy got revised again.

well i usually heard them as

hemichromis bimaculatus = jewel cichlid or red jewel cichlid

and the ops fish is

hemichromis elongatus = banded jewel cichlid or 5 star general

The person is thinking of what is in the hobby as "jewel cichlid" Hemichromis bimaculatus, which is not what we're referring to which is "5 star general" Hemichromis elongatus.

Sorry for not being more clear.

Oh, yes. Important distinction. Five star kills everything, other jewels not so much.

my 5 star general's got some fin damage now after half a day. he fights back with the grammode, but the grammode is more vicious. i hope things cool down in the next couple days. i'd hate to lose this fish. he's a cool fish. otherwise i'll need a temporary tank to put him in.

@ balton 777 do you still have your grammodes?

No, I sold my breeding pair of grammodes. They were far too aggressive for my tank. They needed their own tank and I couldn't give them one. :(

It just goes to show how much more aggressive and destructive CA cichlids can be. I added a suggestion in your pic thread, but not sure if these two will ever work. It is always tricky stocking with CA cichlids.
