how long could a grammodes live in a 36x18 60 gallon system? it would be kept alone. I have heard alot of diferent things about there max size like 9-13 inches which one is true? How fast do they grow

I'd arguably say as long as you want if you make him a solitary fish and you want to slow/stunt his growth. . . but it can probably be kept in there for as much as a year, maybe more while you aquire a more suitable home. Check the newspapers for bigger tanks, it's worth looking at.

I've always heard grammodes are one of the slowest growing CA species. one guy I know from another site has been keeping grammodes for 2 years and it is around 9". based on that I'd say you could easily keep it in there for at least 2 years or so. if it's a female you might just be able to keep it in there for life but a male will eventually be better in a somewhat larger tank. max size of males I believe is in the 12-13" range. :D

solo in a 60 can still reach max size, Ive had rd, jags and fronts reach full sizes in a 55 so 5 more gallons is just as good.

They do grow slow even with frequent water changes. Great fish though can be shy if tank is decorated.

DEFINATELY wont take to new mates once it stake its territory unless that fish is just as bad.

the key to growth is water changes; fish emit a hormone that inhibits them from out growing thier environment(these are the same hormones that keep subordinate fish from growing) so all the fish know is the hormone is is no longer being recieved so the fish keeps growing. grammodes grow slooww so it will take 2 or so yrs. for him to reach 10 inches.

In college I kept a female in a 55 for 2 years. she was a great fish but never grew over 7 inches. I sold her to a friend with a male. She now lives in a 180 and is about 8.5 inches.
