Has anyone ever put grape vine in their freshwater tank? I really don't want to pay for driftwood and the really thick grape vine is cheaper!

That's a good idea and I bet it would work once it was water logged. People use different kinds of leaves in their tanks all the time, why not grape vines?
It would look so good, too. If you're worried about pesticides just boil it 1st.

bought it at pet supplies plus. don't think there are any chemicals in it. but they don't sell it for fish, they sell it for reptiles and stuff...

just boiled it. kinda smells funny now. oh well, i'll give it a shot. gotta let it cool down first though. but thanks guys. i appreciate the input. i have heard that it has killed other peoples fish before. but i don't know if that person prepared the grape vine prior to putting it in there.

true true. thanks again. it's about cool now so time to drop it in there. all the tannins appear to be out of it with the boiling finishing the job. hope my fishes like it!

well so far so good. all fish still alive and it's holding itself down.

wish i had caught this thread before you bought the grapewood. grape wood is full of tannins and no matter how much you boil it or soak it, it will still leech out tannins and lower you PH. also, since it is not a hard wood, it is more prone to rot, mildew, and mold, making it less desirable for even a terrarium setup. if you want some cheap driftwood, check ebay, or check out the mopani wood in the reptile section of any pet store. mopani and manzanita are both hard wood and will do great. IME the grapewood isn't worth wasting your time with

i'll check it for mold and rot here in another day or so. thank you for the input! it's doing good so far and my pH was already low. it is my non-aggressive tank. i bled the tannins out for 2 days cycling hot water soaks. my tank is still clear after 3 days!!
