Som my friend and i were fishing at a local pond very very small, like 50 feet across maybe about 300 feet long, deepest water is about 3 feet, and to our surprise sitting in the shallows, we kept seeing grass pickerel. My friend has wanted a pickerel for his 150 for i dont know how long, but they were about 2 inches long. We must have seen about 20 or so, and there is about no food in this pond and it isnt connected to any other ponds, how do u think they can survive in this? Well, we still havent caught one yet, but we have one in the net about 3 times when it hopped out. But we were happy to walk out of that pond with our baby turtle Bruno:) How can these little guys survive when they are the smallest fish in the pond and there is nothing for them to eat?

Does not surprise me at all. Frequently pickerel are self supporting populations. They eat each other. Very few YOY make it to adulthood, they are either predated upon by the larger faster growing YOY, or the adults in the population.

but there werent any adults in the pond thats what is weird about it. We think someone might have gone and dumped them in there. The pond i so shallow u can see everything swimming in it, but there is definetly larger than about 5 inch bluegill

I got curious and found following from a wikipedia:

"The pike feeds on a wide range of food sources. Their primary prey is other fish, including their own kind. Their main prey is roach whenever available; they also prey on herring, perch[ [eels]] and minnow. They devour fish up to one-third of their own size. Pike are cannibalistic; some 20% of the diet consist of pikes smaller than themselves.

They will also prey on insects and amphibians such as newts or frogs in times when food is scarce, and occasionally on small mammals, like moles or mice when caught water-borne. Small birds such as baby ducks may become a target for hungry pike. Pikes are also known to prey on swimming snakes, like vipers."

I remember fishing for pickerel when I was a kid, they have great eyesight and were imposible to get close enough to net them at shore.

o ya, i 4got about those little guys, thanks for reminding me, this is me friend who wants the pickerel

There is plenty for them to eat. I am sure there is a minnow population, probably some type of frog, insects, and each other. A hungry fish eats what is available.

There are bullfrogs, we caught a dragonfly larvea with the sunfish fry, and we've seen minnows in there but pirahna thinks they're LMBs.:)
