So Ive been pondering the Idea of getting a grass pickerel. Iam thinking of starting it of in a 10gal which I just planted. Iam wondering if I should put some feeder guppies in there now and get them to breeding size before I order the pickerel.
nope I am getting them from Brian, they will be about 2 inchers. So I will get the guppies.SnaKeheAdSrAwSomE;3324858; said:im guessing ur getting it from paul huh? i got mine there. yeah, get the guppies to breeding size. the pickerel come in pretty small so small guppies would be best

yes I know about the aggressiveness of sunfish as from my stock list you can tell I have quit a few and different species. But I did not think northern longear or redspots were very aggressive at least compared to something like a green. I have quite a few spots I can put the pickerel when it outgrows the 10. But eventually it will go in a 40gal Breeder. I do like the Idea of a QT.blurock;3336073; said:Yeah, sunfish don't make good tankmates for pickerel... look at almost any of the other threads on here involving Pickerel (and I know we've all told you before) There really aren't any good tankmates for pickerel... getting a pickerel means you need to be okay with a species tank.
Also, a pickerel will outgrow that 10 really fast... It wouldn't be much better, but a 20 long would at least give it a bit more room since they tend to be skittish fish... I would recommend keeping the guppies in a QT tank, and then just put a few in the tank with the pickerel every day, babies and large guppies will be gone from the tank very quickly if you just leave them all in with the Pickerel, and you run the risk of the fish eating itself to death/stomach bursting...
