grass pickerel

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've heard warmouth can work with pickerel. It would make sense, as they are very similar in temperament.

Sculpin don't need fast current, and I doubt a redfin could eat an adult one, at least the one's I have around here. I do agree that darter's probably wouldn't last long though. And I did mention that they would probably work if they had enough cover, if there's not enough cover they may be an attempted snack.

I don't know that warmouth would be a good choice either. They get too large, and the pickerel would probably become a snack.

Even adult sculpins are fair game for a fullgrown adult redfin pickerel as sculpins dont get very much bigger than 4-5inch long while redfin/grass pickerel averaged 7 to 9 inch long and sometimes 12 inch long. There are not too many suitable tankmates for redfin/grass pickerel.

Stonecat is possible tankmate as they are too big for pickerel to tackle. Tadpole madtom is another possibly tankmate as they are not aggressive as the bullhead.

Thats why I said Flier, they are not so aggressive as warmouth and other Lepomis species and have similar diets to pickerel.

The one problem: These are chain pickerel, not fullgrown ones.

sorry if this is a stupid question but i just wanted to make sure, my roommate just dumped his about 8 inch pleco in my tank and i have a small pickerel on the way, is there any chance the pleco would mess with the pickerel?
thanks

what is the temp in that tank? plecs like warmer water than is ideal for a Pickerel to live in. Mine is not happy unless the temp is 60s to 70, while Plecs tend to enjoy mid 70s to low 80s
