Are there any grasses that can be grown in just sand or gravel? Im sure this question has been asked before but I think it would look great

Dwarf hairgrasses can begrownin sand or gravel without CO2. However they are quite slow growers without. My brother has some in his tank that is slowly spreading after 2 months. Worth a try though and it looks great.

I'm gonna have to disagree with the sand and gravel option about dwarf hair grass, I have 2 friends in this and one more experienced then the other. The more experienced one told me that dwarf hair grass could only be grown in aquarium soil. Plus chase your lighting should be at least 3 times the gallons of your tank to start a planted. Think about the costs and do more research before you start chase.

How tall of grass? Dwarf saggittaria grows quickly once it gets over transplant shock. In the first month-ish you'll lose a lot of leaves and won't see much growth, but then when it settles in, add a little fertilizer (I use Flourish) and it goes nuts. It sprout new plants on runners quite often, so in a few months you'll have a dense little jungle. The only thing is, even though it's "dwarf" sag., I have some stalks that are bent over in the tank well over a foot long. Trimming would prevent this, but I like it. The majority of it (80-90%) is ~6" tall.

It's a lot easier to grow than hair grass, and I never had luck with hair grass in sand. Not saying it can't be done, but I had some in sand and some more in flourite in the same tank, the sand clumps died after a few weeks.

~edit: i'm gunna post a pic of mine, one sec...

I know it looks huge in this picture, but it's in a little 10g tank, so in a larger tank it will be less "jungle" and more "grass." And like I said, if I wanted I could trim it back every once in a while to keep it low.

Haha dude your tank is a freakin jungle! It looks nice. What are your floating plants?

Caleb you think I haven't done my research i.e. talked to the lady at trop and pet emp AND research things online? You are just as new to planted tanks as I am. Dont try to pass yourself off as a knowledgable planted tank person after asking nick things. And Ive already bought the lighting. I know full well the costs of this endeavor. I also find it funny that you are contradicting GrantA4 when he said it already worked for his brother.

On that note, has anyone had success with java fern in sand or java moss in a non CO2 equipped tank.

Ok chase don't act like you know everything about everything when you just started. How long have you been keeping fish or even how long can you keep a single fish alive? 4 weeks at most so don't talk to me like you know everything, and chase I do know more than you when it comes to planted tank, just because I haven't started a tank doesn't mean I haven't researched this stuff for the past 3 months. When nick told me about it, that's when I started doing research on it. And when you tell me to not pass knowledge from nick as my own all I can think it is, really chase? And I like that post about how to prepare manzanita wood it was very helpful, but too bad NONE of the information you posted was yours, chase you just posted a step by step process of how to prepare manzanita when nick told you everything and you tried to post it as your own information when it wasn't at all. Plus 50% of what you posted was wrong, the water will not turn brown if you out the wood in only if you sand it down first and you not suppose to bake it for 4 hours your suppose to bake it for 6 hours and the white algae that grows on it is harmless to the tank and I will go away in a matter of time. If you want to waste your money on hair grass and have it die, fine by me it's not my money.

Uhm... anyways...

The floaters are Amazon Frogbit, grows like duckweed, got to pull out handfuls about once a month. Nice big leaf clusters on top with long fuzzy roots trailing down. Java fern can be grown pretty much anywhere, the key is to never ever ever cover the rhizome. It will always die if you do, even though it may take a while. I don't know the exact biology behind it, it just does. Java moss is easy too. Finding a way to attach it to something is tricky and takes a while. Some people wrap a net around a rock with java moss stuffed inside, and eventually it will stick. I guess you could try that on the ground, no reason it wouldn't work.

BTW not to put down MFK, I love it, but there's not a huge amount of plant love here. PlantedTank.net is a great forum for reading up on plants and asking questions. Preferably in that order. They have all sorts of great information from experienced people on lighting, plants, substrates, scaping, CO2, fertilizers, everything.

I might have to try some frogbit. Im trying to find anyone with floating plants right now but none of my LFS has any.
