Grasses

I'm gonna have to disagree with the sand and gravel option about dwarf hair grass, I have 2 friends in this and one more experienced then the other. The more experienced one told me that dwarf hair grass could only be grown in aquarium soil. Plus chase your lighting should be at least 3 times the gallons of your tank to start a planted. Think about the costs and do more research before you start chase.

Actually I have some growing in play sand. The thing with dwarf hairgrass and some of the other popular foreground plants, is they are poor competitors for CO2. Most plants don't need high light either. The amount of light only slows or speeds up growth, and with it demand for nutrients and CO2. The lower the light the slower it grows and is less demanding. If you plant dwarf hairgrass in play sand be sure that the hairgrass is the only plant or like majority of what is in the tank. Plant it with slow growing species, fast growing plants will suck up nutrients and CO2 and hairgrass won't have a chance.

I have my hairgrass over low light, and once in a great while I will give it some fertilizer and some flourish excel. I got anubias nana and some dwarf clover growing in the same tank and that's it. And it grows pretty good.

One of my friends had Dwarf Hairgrass growing in her tank and it spread out pretty well. It died eventually because she had too many faster growing plants.

I'm not sure about Java Moss but Christmas Moss will root to sand. I've had it root for a while then my loaches dug it up. I've also got a baby Java Fern that I haven't rooted yet but most of the plants I've had like Melon Swords have rooted well in sand. For large plants you may want to tie a few rocks to the roots to hold them down in the sand, esp. if you have any types of loaches since they will uproot them.

Planted tanks aren't as hard as they seem. I have sucky lighting, no c02, and my plants grow like wildlife but of course they are low light mosses, ferns and swords.

If you can't find any frogbit in the marketplace here or at your lfs, try aquabid, I just bought some there and have never not seen it up for sale there.

Dwarf hairgrasses can begrownin sand or gravel without CO2. However they are quite slow growers without. My brother has some in his tank that is slowly spreading after 2 months. Worth a try though and it looks great.

I might point out, the grass is the only plant in the tank.

Vals do grow incredibly without CO2. My suggestion would be do Dwarf Hairgrass and use DIY co2, it'll grow fine. Not sure why your buddies are acting like plants are an impossible endeavor, I have several planted tanks (high tech and low tech) and it's not very difficult, just costly.

My buddies are tank purists, and also think that im incapable of doin anything beyond keeping fish alive for the past few months. But so far everything is going great in my tank, and ill be getting some tetras in there to really spruce up the look of the tank. When i get back from a trip im taking (and getting some good work hours in) ill be suspending the light, removing the rim, putting in a better filter and light system, and enjoying my tank. The only thing that money will be spent on is the filter and lighting system. I love all the DIY things you can do with your tank.

Chase we only treat you like this because you don't have that much experience and you act like you do. You have a small 15 gallon tank that you've only had for a month and a half (at most). Plus you've managed to kill all you fish in the short time you've had a tank.
