what do you mean by "dead spots"??

Spots where the sand compacts itself and it can hold in all kinds of bad stuff unlike gravel it can't "breath" and let water flow through it letting the bacteria to be broken down

I've had this problem before and when I disturbed a couple spots alot of nasty shT came out and the lvls of everything sky rocketed. Maybe it was just me but I dislike silica alot :D :D :D

If you're going for silica sand substrate you might as well put in some bichirs or clown loach.. anything fish that would keep disturbing the sand...

I just got some silica sand earlier in my bichir(3 palmas & 1 ornate) tank(36"x16"x16).. :headbang2

i'm in the process of removing gravel from my tank and going bare bottom.

I would say.. No gravel

I like a bare-bottom just cause its easier to clean
