I have tried everything with sustrate and like Tahitian Mood Sand Black the best, but it darkens my fish so much I can't see them, so I'm going with natural, light sand. If you use sand, gases can trap under it, so stir it up a bit and it's easy to see the poodoo and suck it up.

You loose a little sand during waater changes, but it's worth it. Rinse and soak it well first, break up all the little balls. I keep sand at about 1/2" max

it doesnt matter...which ever you preffer..just some advice if you go with sand. make sure its not crushed coral/seashell sand, b/c it will increase your PH a little...use crushed quartz pool filter sand...(i learned the hard way) :duh:

right now my Jar is in a gravel tank...i have a tank with sand waiting for him till he gets bigger..so again its really up to you.

nothing like none....:D best for the fish as it stays clean an easy to vaccum... and what's best for the fish is what it's all about!;)

My monster tank is bare bottom with black on the bottom, back and one side. Some guys here don't like it, but I like the look and it's easier for maintenance. My tank isn't actually perfectly bare bottom now as I've added a big piece of driftwood for the bottom dwellers..
