As an added thought, our 55 gal just went from gravel to sand using a plastic strainer to grab the majority of sand out, and then a cheapy bendable plastic cutting board to scoop out the remaining bits. The water level was dropped by about 1/3 and the new sand (bough at Home Depot for $4.59 / bag) dropped in a pint at a time to keep the clouding to a minimum. Worked like a charm, all the fish stayed in, and no one got hurt.
