The goldfish and snails have been doing that job for me lately. I haven't vacuumed in a week at least. But I also have a bunch of malaysian trumpet snails.

I've also got the fish across the two aquariums so that helps out. The mosquito fish, crayfish and glass shrimp are in the sump with the plants. I also keep a large mass of hydrilla in the big tank for another small school of mosquito fish. The sump kinda acts as a breeding area and the fry tend to get pumped to the big tank...where their population is held in check by the bigger fish.

I left town this last weekend and the pump line came loose, fell out and drained the sump (no problem, they are the outdoor attraction). When I got back the aquarium was really green from suspended algae but I could still see through it. Fixed the pump, scraped the glass and two hours later it was like nothing had happened. Each critter plays a role in keeping things going smoothly.

I just cleared some of my stock out of my 125 but it still looks over stocked for some reason. Maybe because my Oscar and pims are growing like its their jobs!! >.<

I had sand setup in my 120g before (a month ago) i can never gravel vacuum, it would suck some sand. U might get some poop or waste out but sand will always be in the way. I was better off using a fine fish net. Sand would end up in my sink amd filter

Let me tell u, after removing 99% of the sand, it made a big difference on my water quality even on my over stocked tank. Its so much cleaner. I have couple driftwoods and that was it. Nice n simple

Dont get me wrong, sand is nice looking. All really depends on u

I would like for it to go on the record that I LOVED my hot pink gravel! lol for those who are brave enough, do a forum search on the keyword "Whiplash"... I also had a thread going forever ago for pictures of piranhas, and Whip made it into the POTM voting at 3". The best part of fish keeping, is that as long as the water stays clean, you can decorate however you want, and I did. Mostly to annoy my ex who was scared of my half-blind vicious killer of cichlid pellets and freeze-dried gammarus! He hated pink, and I'm a bright colors kind of gal.
