Gravel Vaccuum Doesnt have enough Suction?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
are you draining to a bucket or to the sink/toilet/tub

if yer going to a bucket then i dunno what to tell you
but if yer going to the tub or something you may be losing preasure by making the hose go back up at the end...

Do you have a canister filter? If so adapt your python to the intake.Plenty of suction and no wasted water or you can get a magnum hot 250 with the power kleen attachment works like a dream.

I drain mine out the backyard. No Faucet needed works great. No problem at all.

Ditto, sound like you need to get more flow the best way is to have the end of the hose as low as physically possable. I wouldnt use a powerhead, if you sucked up a bit of gravel it would wreck the impellar and possabley the motor.

If you notice my signature, I have a lot of big tanks... I also have poor water pressure, despite turning the faucet on full blast. I did look at that one vacuum on foster and smith, but it was just too expensive. All I did was get an old school siphon vacuum and a five gallon bucket with a pump in it. I then pump the water down the drain. It works well, but it takes forever to fill up the damn tanks afterward. I was thinking about getting a bilge pump with a float switch for the bucket to make things streamlined.

Maybe when I make more money I'll buy that thing...unless someone tells me that thing is the greatest thing ever...then maybe I'll think about it.

I am developing a replacement unit for the python. It is a powered unit that replaces the water at the same rate as what is being removed. 2 steps in 1 with adjustable power and a gallon meter to know how big of a water change you are doing.

My gravel Vacuum doesnt seem to have enough suction. I have a 25' python. It will get solid fish poo in the chamber, and it'll just swirl around, and not actually get picked up. Also When I had gravel, I didnt get any "gravel tumbling action" like everyone else talks about. Even when I have the water running, to aid the suction, only then is it just barely enough to get solids up.... Still no tumbling.

My question is, What can I do to improve this. Smaller chamber? Shorter hose? Do something else?

has anyone tried this?

Or is there a DIY powered gravel vaccuum?

Thanks,
Cory

I don't have a python, just a hose with the gravel attachment. I had the same problem. I was wondering why I didn't have the gravel tumbling action like other people. I figured out that the gravel attachment was too large and too long and there wasn't enough water pressure going to the hose. I took my scissors and cut off a section and made the attachment shorter. Voila, because the attachment was shorter, that made the water pressure greater in the attachment. Hope this helps, The Doctor.
