Obviously the tank with no substrate will be easier to clean, but what do you all prefer :D?

I used to like no gravel as in a bare-bottom tank. But now, they look too bare and less attractive. I'll always have sand or gravel now. prefer sand though.

i prefer play sand, a lot of people stay away from it because it's hard to wash...but it's just a one-time rinse. yeah it took 20 rinses in a 3g bucket to wash about 35lbs lol
it's annoying with a HOB though...if i touch the sand near the hob without turning it off first it starts making noise. leave the sand alone and it'll be fine

Yep, agree, sand is the way to go. If you use pool filter sand it should be heavy enough not to cause issues with your filters either.

sand or bare bottom. gravel sucks, way too messy

I like sand also. I mixed black sand and play sand together for my tanks and I think I looks great.

I don't like the look of a bare bottom tank as it's not very natural looking.

I really like sand. I've replace all the gravel in my tanks with sand
