Gravel vs sand

I have used gravel in my tanks for about 8 years and recently switched to sand. i wish that i switched to sand sooner it is much easier to clean the fish like it better and it looks better and it is cheaper than gravel. i have pool filter sand in all of my tanks now

It depends I have had sand in geophagus tanks and they keep the sand turning over so much I was never worried about pockets of ammonia or anything. Just keep it moved around when you do your regular water changes and you should be fine. The worst thing about it in my experience is its hard to syphon the waste out BC the sand wants to come up with it

I switched from gravel to sand on and off over the years, depending on my fish. I think it depends on your fish of choice. Recently I went to stingrays, sand is a must. Not quite as easy to clean. I basically use net to scoop out large pieces. Also, I have seen posts on using white play sand. Very inexpensive. However I have no idea of success. Over all, everything has an issue, disease, messy whatever. Don't set up a tank if you will not clean it. Ultimately it's your choice.

Just my two cents

Sand is much better, if you stock your tank right, you will have spotless sand almost all the time. And even if you do get Debri build up a quick suction off the top and it's done, no more gravel vacuuming. Also sand looks nicer, and I do agree with the above that the fish like it way more. Only con I have is it kills hob filters

Cleaning I figured would be a pain! I saw videos of peoples tanks with sand and think its looks good! Can anyone tell me how much truth there is to when cichlids dig in gravel it files there teeth down

One of the best looking tanks I've ever have was about a 30% gravel (natural river) and 70% PFS. All my tanks are PFS now. PFS is heavy enough to settel down if vacumed up by accedent the only sand I had trouble with was the black moon sand it's very light and does get sucked up if vacumed. PFS also brightens up the tank and looks very clean. At ~$10.00 for 50lbs you can't beat it IMO.

I use coarse pool filter sand in both my tanks and love it...I've yet to see my hob filters suck any up, but I can imagine with a finer sand like play sand that may happen.

I find it pretty easy to clean actually, I take my gravel vac and hover over the sand and swirl the vac a bit and it stirs the stuff up and goes right up the tube and not taking the sand. Basically I don't jam the vac down into the samd like I would with gravel.
