Gravel vs Sand

You said your stocking SA? Cichlids? Cats?

Just about every cichlid, cory or loricariid I've kept or currently keep, prefers sand. Maybe you should base the decision on the tankmates.

PFS is heavy and sinks fast. I routinely dump a little sand out of the sediment trays on my canisters on my mbuna tank, but I also bought filters that play well with sand. As stated above, prefilter foam and or raising the level of your intakes for HOB's works well.

Sand is GREAT! I recently replaced all my gravel tanks with sand. Put in atleast 3 inches of sand and see if you can get a live deep sandbed going. It will help your tank be healthier as it adds another natural bio-filter, the eliminate amonia, nitrates, nitrites, hydrogen sulfide, and solid waste. They also are great for plant growth. More information here: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_7/volume_7_1/dsb.html

Plecos suck with sand. SO MUCH POOP!
I just switched to sand on all 4 of my tanks and I love it.. but man I hate pleco poop

Lol. I thought the same thing at first but at the end of the day it just makes it easier to see.... And remove.

I have a footlong common that is an absolute crap factory.

Quickrete pool filter sand all the way! Very cheap, easy to prepare for tank use, and very easy to keep clean. Plus the fish love to dig in the sand.

Wow really? Home depot or lowes should carry it...but like you said being in hawaii prob makes a difference.

I know when i checked actual pool stores the PFS was alot more expensive(price range you mentioned) but hardware stores were WAY cheaper. I would just double check or ask around the site to see if any other people in your area have found good deals on PFS.

So i went with the PFS in my 125 and im loving the look, now time for a nice large peice of driftwood. I can already see what you guys were talking about with the pleco, made quite the mess in one night lol
