Gravel vs Sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used to have gravel and it IMO is much easier to clean. However I've switched to sand and to me anyway it looks 100 times better hen gravel. I had white sand and recently switched because the waste sticks out big time. Ever after cleaning and water change with in a day I could see it. Just switched to black and I wish I had done that from the start. The black brings out the color of the fish and makes the live plants look much better. If you can spend a little more and get you some substrate from a pet store that's made for a tank. With play sand anytime I had to move anything it would get into my filter and ruined both of them. Petco has 20 pound bags for about 15 dollars whoch isn't to bad compared to most.

Currently using pool filter sand in my tanks. Get it around here for $10 per 50 lbs bag, saves you a lot of money when trying to fill large tanks. Grain is heavy enough to stay grounded, and the colouration isn't too bad either, it's mainly white with a few black specks here and there. Doesn't take a lot of time wash, compared to flourite black sand or play sand.
Pool filter sand is also pretty good for planting, not too dense, so roots branch out and thrive.

Thanks y'all, great input. Like I said, I am loving the sand (pool filter sand). It is quite heavy and sinks very quickly if I stir it up. I dont foresee any issues with the filter. Good to know that the depth I have won't be an issue, because I love the way it looks and gives me more freedom to play around with the tank asthetics.

Also love the new LED light I got. Just need these damn rummy and black neon tetras to stop dying :( The cherry barbs, panda cories and red tail black shark are all fine. Seems the smaller guys arent doing so well. Maybe ill stick to slightly bigger fish...

If you use sand you have to use a sponge prefilter to keep sound out of the filter intake.

Sorry to hear about your cori cats, what type of biological filter do you use?

just the bio insert in my AC70.

It just disturbs me that it looks like this guy bled into himself. Makes no sense and Ive never seen a fish look like that.
