Greasing filter impellers.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Plumbers silicone grease is used in household fixtures like shower valves and kitchen faucets so I am pretty sure it is safe for ingestion by humans. I think it would be better than a petroleum based product. It is also a little thicker than vasoline. My experience is it will bandaid the problem for a while but the problem will eventually return. The cheap bundled filters and pumps that come in most aquarium kits just don't last for long and eventually need to be replaced by a more quality component.

I'd have thought any lube on the impeller shaft would just be rinsed off fairly quickly? Not a lot of water flow, but there is some.

yeah, there is some. but of course that why it would definitely be beneficial to use something that isn't (at least not easily) water soluble ?

Even then, would be scrubbed off pretty quickly where the impeller is hitting the shaft, or if it's not touching the shaft then there's not much point in it?

Might give it a try this weekend if I can be motivated enough to clean my filters.

I've never lubed a shaft in a pump, but I have to clean them about every 6 mos or less, because of a buildup of gunk and stray pet hair.

Most of mine have had rubber bearings lubed by the water.

But that pet hair is my bane. Virtually every cranky pump or powerhead has had hair on the shaft.

I bought a couple modern mag-drive DC programable pumps this year, so we'll see how they fare.

I've literally just bought the aqua clear 20, 30, and 110. Im so excited to use them. They do an amazing job at clearing fogginess! Where did you get your aqua clears, if I may ask??? Were they good priced?

I’ve had AC filters running for more years than I can recall, still running several old school AC 500’s (110’s), and never lubed a single moving part. If the impeller shaft or impeller is running rough just clean them up . At the most maybe some emery cloth on the shaft, or replace. No need for lube unless you just like lubing things. Lol

Well, I got around to cleaning my filters...And couldn't find my vaseline.

I think I should clean my filters more often...

I'm pretty sure this had a couple handfuls of coral in it last time I cleaned it...How long has it been?
