Ime great danes age alot faster than other breeds... They have an average shorter life span than most other breeds too... But they are loyal intimidating and fun... And it will most likely get along with your english bull dogs... But that really depends on each dogs individual attitude though

I have a great dane. Got him when he was 5 week. Already had a 2 yearold Lab/pit/whatever mix and a Shih Tzu.

FOOD is the most important THING, you really should not buy cheap food because the issues that come along with Dane. A GREAT forum for you to look into is the Great Dane Forum http://www.dolforum.com/forum/index.php

Iv always wanted one but the rediculously short life scan scared me off.

Never had a great dane but have met many of them. They're silly fun dogs. The short life span made me think twice about getting one also but every breed of dog has something neg about it.

The short life span is really based on what humans do.

If you do not provide the right foods with the right needs as far as glucosamine then they'll have joint and hip problems. If you allow them to run and play after eating, then that causes Bloat.

They need to stay slimed down (back to food again) so there isnt as much weight on their hips. Remember larger breeds have bigger organs compared to smaller dogs so of course a large dog isnt going to live as long as a small dog.

^^ I totally agree, we have a friend that has a 13 year old dane, she still gets around great and is happy and healthy. Be very, very selective on your puppy, make sure both the parents have a good history with no problems, feed good food, and give them some exorcize. Life style is important.

Andi know many that have not exceeded the standard life span of 8 years

I agree with you about "it's what you feed/take care of your dog" thing but genetically speaking on average they don't have very long life spans. I love bigger breed dogs like GSD's, Huskies, Am staffs, Rotties etc but I hate that bigger breed dogs have so many more problems like hip problems, joint deterioration, and are more prone to bloat. Doesn't deter me though.
