GREAT day!! New monster....well almost...

Oscaroo you are up late, did you work out your mum's WIFI password?

yes bichirs may feed from the surface I have had my ornate do this before but in my experience it is only when they are very hungry that they go to the surface. Feeding a bichir from the surface has absolutely no benefits as the other fish will always get to the food first. If anything you want to teach the bichir to take sinking food after the lights are out, that way you know when you put them in your main tank they will get food every single night and the other active diurnal fish will not steal it from them.

My small ornate used to surface feed occasionally and I would give him cichlid gold but anything I put in the tank now my giant gourami will eat, so I put food for my bichirs and clown knife in after lights out and that way they all get fed. If you are wanting to add hikari gold to your bichirs diet for nutrients then by all means just crush them against hte glass til the small bubble of air comes out, that way you can just sink it to the bottom.
were I live it six fourty, I woke up at five thirty... I have had good experience with surface feeding but you have more birchirs than me so you probibly know better...

I'm not saying I've had bad experiences with it Oscaroo, I'm just saying that you don't want to get your bichir used to surface feeding and then when you put it in your main tank with lots of other fish it will get outcompeted for food every time and not get much food. I just drop loads of shrimp pellets and massivore in my 225 after the lights have been out for a bit. I drop it in all 4 corners so that my bichirs and clown knife will get some.

Lastnight I fed the other fish first, which are just some tetras in the grow out, then dropped in crushed soaked hikari gold with bloodworms. He ate it up perfectly it. I then turned off the lights and left him to eat. From my understanding they are more active at night so my feeding schedule with him will be nightly and sinking food which works well because a majory of the food I buy is sinking food. Thank you for the advice. Everything helps.

This little guy is extremely active constantly swimming and at 2 inches is already fighting with my dwarf frogs and winning lol

Also, I have another tank which is a 10 gallon planted with sand substrate would this be a better grow out at this size with sand bottom instead of the gravel?

Congrats on your Monster. My Ornate was always the boss of his tank and still is. I picked him up around your size also. In a few years your Ornate will be close to 12-15" in no time. Feed it a variety of foods. "Nate" probably ate not only what can fit into his mouth but more then he can chew also. Beware of his tank mates getting beat up.

I kept mine on gravel in a 20g until he went from 2" to 5". he became very territorial at that time so I moved him into my big tank and now he is the most active bichir I have. like I said he chills in the corner next to where my desk is so he is always out and about. I also feed my fish prawn whenever I eat it so at least once a week.

Heres some pics of mine from 2"

Don't have any recent pics of him, but he was 4"-5" in that last picture and now he is close to 10. So I've had 2"-9.5" in just 5 months with power feeding and waterchanges. I also found that once I put him in the 225 he just shot up.
And yes he still retains the same black and yellow colouration. but my camera is broken
