And 35 mg/l of it! Is there anything I can do about this? I didn't have any nitrAtes in my tap last time I checked... about two years ago.

^ The only problem with R/O i've heard is that you have to re-add some of the minerals etc back into the water... but i guess thats your best bet to have purest nitrate free water...

Do you have a well or public water? If the latter contact your health department and go from there. Ordinance requires if I am not mistaken that a 15+ nitrate reading be posted in any public restrooms etc.

If you have a well, you have your work cut out for you! I have a well and even after the home water filtration/ purification system that I have, I still range from 5 to 10 readings. It's gonna cost you plenty:WHOA:!

+1 for triple posts :D

Plants would help take care of those nitrates.

That's my new if-all-else-fails option, to cram a bunch of floating plants in the tank. I do have a nice lighting system on it. Dual 10k T5s.

Yeah that's the thing, I got well water... I have the option to use well water pure from the well or through a water softening system. I tested water from the later which actually has less nitrAte (according to the tetra kit about 12.5) so a little better than from the well.

I would just do R/O man, my parents have a well and they use R/O for drinking/cooking water. As far as re-constitution of R/O water you can find a bunch of diff products for that at your LFS or any online store such as BigAl's etc. Seachem's equilibrium, ROrite and many others I'm sure.
