I was recently at my local asian market and noticed that there were a number of whole frozen fish there that were individually frozen and so I tried a few for my rays. There is on in particular that works very well for me, it is like a silver side, about 4 inches long, and fully intact just frozen. My rays and most other fish love them, I have seen a definite growth spurt since I started mixing them with the shrimp they normally recieve, and they are pretty inexpensive. Where I live shrimp are cheap, $2 a pound for smallish ones (40 ct) at the fish market. After heading them to cut down on waste I generally get about 2/3lb of actual food per lb of initial weight. These silversides are $3 a lb and no waste. A fellow MFK'er and I have been talking to the manager and we can get them for $2 a lb if we buy in bulk.

Check it out at your local store and see if it is good for you. At this point my tank is getting 1/2 lb a day and it is ever increasing. I am looking for any way to stretch my pocket book and still keep my rays healthy and growing.

I think that feeding the rays on a whole food, heads n all has to be good for them as fish must factor in their Wild diets.

I feed mine smelt and lance fish as part of their diets. I expect the names vary from country to country.

My fish diet consist of 80% smelt, the other 20% is mix between shrimp, nightcrawlers, krill, squid and cheap seafood mix. I throw a handful of pellets once in a week

My fish eats about 35-40 lbs of frozen food a month, so smelt is great at $ 2 per lb.

Does anybody else on here order the smelt from Jehmco? It is individually frozen and my rays all love it. I get a big box delivered right to my door.

Man, your walmart is high. I pay $10 for a 4lb box.
