Great Ray food source I would like to share

I just bought an 11lb box of smelt from Gordons for 41 dollars. It did go up some her in the last 6 months. But its still the cheapest i can find around here. Plus they get nightcrawlers once a week.

i get the frozen smelt for $2.70 per lb at a local asian grocery store...its complete with head and guts...the rays and fish love em. Its labeled wc (wild caught) canadian lake smelt...

And i get them for free! The biggest lake in Norway is right outside my doorstep and it`s full of smelt. Late at the spring they spawn and you can catch enormous amounts... I have only use them when fishing trout in the winter... but of course it must be a great food source for the rays too! Dont understand why i haven`t thought about that:grinno:

Gut loaded and fresh!

How big are smelt?

I get mine from the local asian store. It's gutless and headless so there are no greasy film that'll cloud the tank. I feed about 2 lbs on the big tank at one time.

The piece is pretty large, about 4" from neck to tail. Each piece is about 3/4" thick.

I paid $ 2.50 per lb as is (without head and tail), They come in 2 lbs bag and I usually grab EVERYTHING they have (30-40 lbs) at a time.

I looked at online places and haven't yet to find one that'll match their prices shipped to my door.

Jehmco.com. Smelt comes in 15?lb case for about $45. Not the cheapest but it is a source if your looking and they deliver. It is whole smelt- individually frozen, guts, heads and all. My stingrays are nuts for it and live blackworms. Their 2 favorites.
